I've always dug this song but not until today did I learn that it is actually an old Australian Bush Ballad written by nationalist poet Banjo Paterson in 1895.

Complete with Fuzzy Samuels on Sax!! My pops gave me a 45 of Tom Waits "Nighthawks at the Diner" when I was 15 and man that is such a rad album! Have you ever read any of the stories of his childhood?
